Posts: news, events, videos and press on your website
Under Website › Posts you keep the lists your website needs beyond works, artists and exhibitions: news, events, videos, press — or any other type you name. A post type says what its posts are made of; a post is one item of a type. A Posts block puts them on a page, and the pages of artists and exhibitions show the posts you map to them. This article describes the Posts tab in WrkLst 10.
What a post type is
A post type is one kind of list your website keeps. WrkLst offers four to start with — News, Events, Videos and Press — and you can make your own with New post type. Each type has:
- a name, which your website shows over its lists and in the filter;
- an address word — short, in lower case, without spaces, such as
newsorevents— which becomes part of a post's web address; - its fields: what a post of this type is made of. A title is always there; switch on what else you need — Text, Date, Picture, Video, Link, Document, Artists and Exhibitions. A type that has no date field shows no dates, however many its posts carry;
- how it is described to search engines: the schema.org type Google and others read the posts as — NewsArticle for news, Event for events, VideoObject for videos — or none at all.
The pencil beside a type's name opens it again; there you also delete a type together with all of its posts. The post types are optional: a website without them has no Posts tab to fill, and nothing changes on it.
Writing a post
New post opens a form with the fields of the chosen type. Besides the title a post may carry:
- a text, set like a text block, with links and emphasis;
- a date — when an event takes place, or when a piece of news appeared. Your website lists posts newest first by this date; a post without one counts from the day it was written;
- a picture, chosen from your images or uploaded. By default it stands whole on its panel; The picture fills its frame lets it fill the 16:9 panel instead, cut at its focal point;
- a video by its address — from bunny.net, YouTube or Vimeo. Your website never loads a video with the page: visitors see the post's picture as a poster with a play button, and the video loads and plays only when they press it. Without a picture, the film's own still stands there — the picture the video's host keeps of it, fetched once into your images and shown whole at the video's ratio;
- a link to another website, with the words it is shown under — the link opens in a new tab and carries the little arrow that marks every way off your site;
- a document: a PDF from your library that is switched on for websites, such as a press clipping, with its own words. It opens in a new tab too;
- the artists and exhibitions the post is about. A post appears on each of their pages, and the artists stand in the filter of the Posts block.
Featured lifts a post into the Featured section at the top of a filtered list; Published switched off keeps a post as a draft that your website leaves out. Every row of the list shows a post's type, its date, the artists it is mapped to and whether it is featured or a draft; its pencil opens it, the bin deletes it after you confirm.
Posts, like everything else, reach your website with the next publish.
Putting posts on a page
In the page editor the + menu offers, under More:
- Posts — on a page of its own, such as a News page: the site's posts, newest first. The block takes its settings from Post types (which types it lists; none chosen means all of them), Which posts (all, the featured ones only, or all but the featured), Heading (none, the types' names, News or Press — or a Heading of your own) and Filter and search. With Filter and search on, the block stands as a news page does: the featured posts first under Featured, then the rest under More News / Events with a Filter by menu — every type, then the artists of the listed posts — and a Search field. Filtering and searching happen in the visitor's browser, at once. The list does not load every post with the page: Loaded at once says how many come with it — twelve unless you change it — and the next ones follow as the visitor scrolls down (or presses Show more); a filter or a search always covers every post. At most caps the list; 0 is no cap.
- Posts about this — on artist and exhibition pages: the posts you mapped to the artist or the exhibition, under News or Press (or the types' names, or no heading), up to the number you choose. Each post's title leads to it on the page that lists its type.
Both blocks draw a post with its picture or video poster, its title, its text, its link and document, and — for a type with a date field — its date.
Search engines
Each post of a type with a schema.org type is described in the page's structured data: its title, words, picture, date and the artists it is about, in the type you chose. This is what lets a search engine show an event with its date, or a news item as an article.
